Edward Middleton, the famous "Drunkard," has moved to San Francisco and has opened a temperance hotel. Edward's son, Stanley, now grown to virtuous manhood, is working at the hotel, but decides to take his inheritance, (the entire $85) and venture forth to the gold fields in order to make his fortune and propose to lovely Prudence, who also works at the hotel as a maid. In Stanley's absence, two "secret agents" of the Distiller's International Protective Association, plan to once again snare Edward into dependence on the bottle. Just when all seems lost, Stanley returns, Edward finds the strength to give up his addiction to the bottle, the villains are thwarted and Stanley wins the hand of his beloved Prudence.
